My bamboo story

October 29, 2026

5 minutes

Some years ago, I heard the story of the Chinese bamboo. There’s something amazing about the way it grows.

Once you plant it, you need to water it, nurture it, and fertilize it every day. But very little happens in the first year. Just a small shoot appears above the ground. You do the same the next year, and still nothing significant happens. It grows a bit more.

You keep waiting for results, seeing no real evidence of progress despite consistent daily effort. The only thing you know is that the result is supposed to come in four years.

Then, in the fifth year, something extraordinary happens. Within a few weeks, it grows to 27 meters (90 ft) tall.

The question everyone asks: did it do all its growing in those few weeks, or was it growing for four years?

The bamboo was growing mostly underground the whole time, without much visible evidence. It was developing the solid root system needed to support the height and weight of the stalk for a lifetime. Without those four years, the fifth year would never have happened.

I’ve thought about this story many times since, because I’ve experienced something similar.

My “bamboo story”

I’ve written before about how I burned out. This is the story of how I got back.

My weight had climbed to 102 kg, twenty kilos over my normal weight.

My energy was gone. My thinking was slower, and my leadership became less effective. My family relationships suffered.

I knew something had to change fundamentally, not just temporarily.

So I made a few simple decisions and committed to them:

  • 30 minutes of exercise or a fast walk, every day
  • No pastries, and no carbs after 6 pm
  • 7–8 hours of sleep, consistently
  • Limited working hours, to allow genuine recovery

No dramatic, complex fitness program. Just a few things, done consistently, almost every day.

For months, nothing seemed to change. The weight moved slowly. The energy returned gradually. Some weeks, I questioned whether it was working.

Then one morning, I noticed something had shifted.

The weight was coming down faster. I felt genuinely better, not just physically but mentally. My thinking was clearer, and my energy was back.

My “bamboo” had been growing underground the whole time. Two years of invisible, almost daily work. Four simple habits, rebuilding the foundation for the results that came later.

Why it matters

The bamboo story illustrates three lessons I’ve found true in life, in leadership, and in business.

It all starts with a solid root system

To stand strong, the bamboo develops its root system for four long years, so it can support the whole structure above ground when the day comes.

This support system lets it survive the harshest conditions for many, many years, thanks to the durability, strength, and flexibility it developed ahead of time. It could start growing upward right away, as other types of bamboo do, but then it couldn’t support the size and long life that its root system makes possible.

In life and leadership, that foundation is your character, your values, your health, your mindset, and your attitude. These things never show up in a quarterly report, but they decide whether everything built on top of them stands or collapses under pressure.

It all starts with YOU.

It takes small actions every day

There’s no such thing as overnight success, in life, in business, or in leadership.

Real success takes time and diligent effort. Meaningful results come from doing the right things consistently, over a long enough period, without visible confirmation that it’s working.

30 minutes of exercise. One better decision. One more hour of sleep. One weekly review where the team checks progress on what matters most. One priority protected from everything else.

These feel insignificant on any given day. Over a year or two, they impact everything.

It takes persistence, patience, and faith

The hardest part of the bamboo’s growth isn’t the few weeks above ground. It’s the years underground, continuing the same daily work with no real visible evidence that it’s adding up.

Effective people don’t stop when results aren’t visible. They keep moving forward, knowing that if they do the right things every day, the results will eventually come.

Don’t let circumstances, setbacks, people, or slow progress derail you. The foundation is forming. Keep going.

And more important than the result is who you become in the process.

Your action this week

1. Check your foundation

Do your words and actions align? Do you keep your promises, and do the right thing when nobody is watching? Pick one area of your foundation (character, health, relationships, or attitude) to strengthen.

2. Start small

Choose one small daily action that moves you toward something that matters, at home or at work. Commit to it for the next 30 days, even if you see no results.

3. Protect it

Decide how you’ll structure your days so the most important things happen first, every day.

What are you building right now that might not show results for months or years, and are you doing it with the consistency it needs?
